Set in a fictional East-Indies world, Captains of the Golden Age is a zero-luck board game where you will compete for control of the Trading Company. CotGA is a skill-based game that utilizes travel, combat, and resource management – but not in gold. Then what else? Pepper. In this fictional world, whoever controls the pepper trade lays claim to control over the Trading Company. Golden Age Games is the publisher of this new board game, and they hope to draw you in with a promise that your fate does not depend on luck.
Travel the East-Indies to stuff your cargo hold, but prepare to have to fight to defend it, as other players will try to steal it – not all in the pepper trading industry are honest folk. You will also have to make occasional repairs, whether it be due to damage from attacking pirates or general wear and tear of living out at sea. As you play, you will obtain shares from the Trading Company, which will help determine the winner at the end of the game.
For gamers that don’t like to have their fates decided by the roll of a die, this is a nice alternative as it really does come down to skill and how you build/reinforce your ship and crew. I can see this having high replay value, and the folks behind the game are very honest with how they are using the funds from this project.
For a $44 pledge, you can get a copy of Captains of the Golden Age, and we’d recommend checking out the page for more information on how the game is played. This project ends on June 28th, but is already halfway funded after only being out for 3 days. However, slots for cheaper pledges are going fast so make a decision quickly!
