A few weeks ago, we were informed of a new Kickstarter that was going to be launched for a gaming accessory : RPG Coasters. The photo above is the product we were pitched with – and you’ve got to admit, they’re pretty awesome looking! We were offered a set to share our opinions on and wanted to do so now that the project is live and available for consumers to check out.
We requested, and received, a set of coasters cut from maple wood. They arrived quickly and I was very impressed as we unwrapped them. They are very detailed and very well made. A thin layer of felt is attached to the underside for support. They are quiet as you slide them on the table, and they don’t stick or put your drink in danger of falling. We expected them to be heavier than they are, but we like the light-weight feel to them.
So, how do they hold up? Very well. We put them to the test with cups that demonstrated some impressive condensation which trickled down to our coasters. Upon launch of the Kickstarter, we learned that they are treated with a polymerizing oil and a lacquer spray. This technique did the job because we did notice the condensation resting into the designs of the coaster, but they did not fall off the sides or warp the wood. And when checked the next day, there were no rings left behind. Alexander says they are water-resistant but not water-proof. He says that he left one outside one night when it rained and it did slightly warp, but some time out in the sun reset it to its original state. However, I don’t forsee many gamers taking their games outdoors in the rain to where this would be an actual problem.
As avid gamers, we understand the perils of cold drinks posing danger to our games. Wet character sheets, soaked board corners, and more. These coasters are stylish, highly detailed, and would make a fantastic addition to any gaming group. These coasters are beautiful…I almost don’t want to use them for their intended purpose, but a dry table is required around these parts! Gift a set to your GM, buy a set for your game room if you’re hosting, and enjoy an RPG-themed accessory to add more flair to your table.
RPG Coasters is on Kickstarter from now until August 30th, and you can snag your own set of 5 coasters for $40. The set of 5 includes the Game Master, Cleric, Fighter, Rogue, and Wizard coasters made with maple, cherry, or walnut wood. You can also purchase individual class or named coasters for less as a gift for a single player. Check out the project page for information about how they’re made and how you can customize your set for your personal needs!
