Paizo has just announced a new playing option for their Pathfinder Society Organized Play. This new option, entitled the Core Campaign, is exactly that: the ability to play through a campaign using only what’s available in the Pathfinder Core Rulebook. This new option will offer a better jumping off point for new players as well as a more streamlined experience overall.
Mike Brock, Pathfinder Society Coordinator, had this to say about the new campaign option:
“We’re always looking for ways to make Pathfinder Society as accessible and fun to play as possible. Thanks to some great feedback and discussions with the community, we’re thrilled to launch what we think will make Pathfinder Society even better – not only for the 75,000 current players worldwide, but to all the new players who will enjoy easier access to the world of the Pathfinder RPG.”
With the new Core Campaign , player character options are limited to what’s available in the Core Rulebook for the popular RPG. As players complete scenarios, however, new treasures, rewards, and character options will become available. A player may play each Pathfinder Society scenario twice, once with a Core Campaign character and once with a standard Pathfinder Society organized play character, allowing a robust replay option for the first time since the launch of the campaign. A character must belong to either the Core Campaign or the standard campaign—not both. At any time a Core Campaign character may transition into the standard campaign, but no standard campaign character may transition to the Core Campaign.
I think this option will see many more players jumping into the society, and I feel it offers veteran players more options for restricted gameplay. It takes all of the, well, “uberness” out of it, if you will. I like the idea and I can’t wait to see what they do with it. For more info, check out the official Pathfinder Society site.
