The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game got its first deluxe expansion with the release of Khazad-Dum, taking you into the depths of Middle Earth’s terrors. Now, three nightmare decks based on the adventures scenarios contained within are available to bring new difficulty to your game. Into the Pit, The Seventh Level, and Flight From Moria have been re-vamped in ways you’d only imagine them to be in the worst of dreams.
Into the Pit features a card used only in this scenario called the Cave Torch. This card is used to explore Moria and progress through the scenario. However, it can only be used so many times, so using it carefully may be your only chance of escaping with your life. This scenario will have you racing to get to your next confrontation.
The Seventh Level is a bit more basic, you know, battling wave after wave of goblins. If not taken care of quickly, treachery cards and specific goblin enemy cards can pump up your adversaries and you may find yourself quickly overwhelmed by the strength of these little nuisances. Additionally, the scenario’s big baddie, Overseer Maurul, gets extra boosts depending on the number of resources on the many goblins you’re sure to dig up.
Finally, players are given options in Flight From Moria in regards to escaping the mines they’ve entered. Three new quest cards are included with the Nightmare deck, and players have the choice to bypass certain ones, but the only way to remove them is to complete all of the quest’s objectives and remove it from the deck.
Khazad-Dum’s scenario additions from this Nightmare deck set certainly look to be terrifying and difficult. I’m looking forward to testing out strategies in order to make Cave Torch work out the best for my fellow gamers and myself, though I’m really not looking forward to facing Overseer Maurul. The Nightmare decks can be purchased through FFG’s website or at your local retailer!
