One of Raine's biggest hobbies has always been gaming. It all started with an Atari and spread out to Yu-Gi-Oh!, Magic: the Gathering, and Dungeons & Dragons. As an artist, Raine takes pride in painting models for games as well as making his own terrain. He's also been a writer for many years, working both in the journalism industry and writing pieces of fiction. He decided to create Initiative : Tabletop as a platform to talk about all things gaming that he simply thought were cool, and reviewing games became a part of it!

Wizards of the Coast Announces Designer Cards for Magic 2015

Magic 2015 Logo

During their PAX East panel this year Wizards of the Coast announced that there will be a set of designer cards that will appear in Magic 2015. Designers of some of our most favorite games on the market have come together to lend their hand at creating cards for yet another amazing game on the market. George Fan made the announcement at the panel through a video that was shown. Take a look at the video below:

George’s card is the Genesis Hydra, which you can see here:

That thing is nasty! Not only do the designers get to create their own cards for the game, but each card will pay credit to its designer by having their name right in the text box! Some big names such as Ed McMillen, Brad Muir, and Mikey Neumann have contributed to the set. Just to make sure you’ve got the whole scoop, here is the complete list of designers who have contributed to Magic 2015:

  • George Fan: designer of Plants vs Zombies
  • Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins: Gabe and Tycho, creators of Penny Arcade
  • Markus Persson: “Notch,” creator of Minecraft and founder of Mojang
  • Richard Garriot: “Lord British,” creator of the Ultima series
  • David Sirlin: designer on Super Street Figher II Turbo HD Remix, Yomi
  • Rob Pardo: chief creative officer at Blizzard, lead designer of World of Warcraft
  • Isaiah Cartwright: lead game designer for Guild Wars 2
  • Justin Gary: designer of Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer and Solforge
  • Stone Librande: lead designer at Riot Games, designer of Diablo 3, creative director of SimCity
  • Brian Fargo: founder and CEO of inXile Entertainment, director of Bard’s Tale, Wasteland, executive producer of Fallout
  • Mike Neumann: Gearbox Software, creative director on Borderlands
  • James Ernest: owner and lead designer for Cheapass Games, designer of Kill Doctor Lucky
  • Edmund McMillen: indie designer of Super Meat Boy, featured in Indie Game: The Movie
  • Brad Muir: game designer at Double Fine Productions leading Massive Chalice, project lead on Iron Brigade

On top of this, Waste Not, the fan-created card, will also be in the set! So we’ve all had a hand in creating cards for the brand new Core Set for Magic: the Gathering. The new set will release on July 18th this year, so it’s well on its way. I have a feeling that this could be the best Core Set to release yet, so I can’t wait to get my hands on it!
