Cryptic Announcement Appears on Wizards of the Coast Site for Magic: the Gathering

Today a very unusual announcement appeared on the Wizards of the Coast site for Magic: the Gathering. The announcement appears to be for either a new set, or a new product, and whatever it is, it’s currently called GVYJTHQXGR. Of course this is a cryptic name, along with a hefty announcement. According to the page, we’ll have to wait until later this evening to decrypt the announcement and see what all this is about.

Two new cards have appeared in the announcement. One of them is a card that has been at the butt-end of a rumor floating around the internet. The two cards, Cogwork Librarian and Magister of Worth, appear to focus on drafting and multiplayer mechanics. These are the first two cards I’ve seen with anything like it since I started playing the game!

Cogwork Librarian MtG

Cogwork Librarian allows a player to draft an additional card from a booster pack, replacing it with Cogwork Librarian. This is big for drafting, as sometimes packs will contain numerous cards that can be useful, while others contain none. Magister of Worth is something altogether different. It has a triggered ability called Will of the council, which calls for players to cast votes for either grace or condemnation. Depending on the majority, each creature card will be returned to the battlefield under its owner’s control from the graveyard, or all creatures except for Magister of Worth will be destroyed.

I don’t know what to expect with this announcement, but I am definitely intrigued to say the least. If more cards follow the Magister’s line of mechanics, these cards could be a ton of fun in Commander. I really hope this isn’t some kind of joke, or a Magic Online-only set. I suppose we’ll just have to wait for tonight to see!
