In August, Fantasy Flight Games announced the next expansion in The Lord of the Rings LCG as The Voice of Isengard, and now have done their preview. Like previous expansions, The Voice of Isengard will come with three new scenarios, as well as new encounters for your Heroes to brave. In this set, players will be transported to the tower of Orthanc, a location previously unexplored in Middle Earth. The new mechanic, Time X, gives players a limited number of turns in which to accomplish a goal, giving a push towards the urgency of the situation.
Are you one of the many fans waiting for Eomer to make an appearance? I am, and am happy that he is coming as a tactical hero. Just like his intense strength in the story, characters leaving play gives Eomer the ability to have a 5 Attack value, making his strength invaluable. With the forces of Rohan growing stronger as you trek towards Isengard, more perks come in this expansion.
The Rohan Warhorse is a new attachment that can be attached to only Tactics or Rohan heroes. This Mount adds a great opportunity to always have heroes at the ready. The Warhorse allows the attached hero to ready if they participate in an attack that eliminates an enemy. In crucial points in an encounter, this could mean the difference in losing a hero or not.
The Westfold Outrider might come across as strange at first glance, but it works beautifully with this expansion. His ability allows you to discard him and engage an enemy not engaged with you already. This can be done during the combat stage, and combined with Eomer’s attack boost when characters leave play. could very well wipe out an enemy in one hit!
Players must move quickly to sooth the chaos that is gathering at the tower of Orthanc, or will be overwhelmed by it. I see so many new decks being constructed, or current ones being refined, with the new mechanics of this expansion set, as well as the Rohan Warhorse and the Westfold Outrider’s discard ability. That will benefit so many more characters than just Eomer, and it just takes a little revision to construct a powerful deck. The release for the Voice of Isengard is just a few weeks away, so make sure your local game store is ordering enough for you and your friends!
