Descent : Shadow of Nerekhall Announced

Nerekhall is a city in the world of Descent with its troubles just like any other, but are there evil forces from within the city causing problems, or are there outside influences? Fantasy Flight has announced a new expansion for Descent : Journeys in the Dark Second Edition called Shadow of Nerekhall, in which you venture through the city to find the source of the problems. This expansion features 4 new heroes and 19 quests which can be played in single sessions or as part of a campaign-style game.

In the beginning of this adventure, you and your comrades are ensuring that evil has been stopped under the rule of Chief Artificer Rylan Olliven, who has suffered familial loss due to their involvement with necromancy.  As time passes, however, more manifestations of evil arise and the source must be found and stopped.

In Shadows of Nerekhall, the overlord has a much larger role with the chance to influence the players actions amongst themselves. A character can be chosen to be corrupt, only known to the overlord, and can drastically change the outcome of an adventure should the players choose to place their trust in the wrong individuals. Changelings will also be lurking throughout the city, and the chances of finding one disguised as a friendly face is high.

The heroes also get a power boost in this new expansion.  The Bard, the Skirmisher, the Conjurer, and the Shadow Walker join the party and bring specialties to the game that fans of the game are sure to want to play. Bards have abilities that trigger when tokens are placed on or off of his board that can give bonuses to the party. The Skirmisher wields two large weapons and is capable and dealing a lot of damage and quickly. The Conjurer plays tricks on the enemy, forcing them to believe in mirages and other magical effects. Lastly, the Shadow Walker is in essence, a Scout with the ability to control a Shadow Soul familiar that can take out large groups of monsters at once.

Set for release in the first quarter of 2014, Shadow of Nerekhall looks to be an exciting adventure for fans of Descent : Journeys in the Dark. Will the overlord successfully take over Nerekhall and spread his corruption beyond the gates of the city, or will the heroes prevail and eliminate evil once more? Only time will tell, so prepare your blades and spellbooks!
