One of Raine's biggest hobbies has always been gaming. It all started with an Atari and spread out to Yu-Gi-Oh!, Magic: the Gathering, and Dungeons & Dragons. As an artist, Raine takes pride in painting models for games as well as making his own terrain. He's also been a writer for many years, working both in the journalism industry and writing pieces of fiction. He decided to create Initiative : Tabletop as a platform to talk about all things gaming that he simply thought were cool, and reviewing games became a part of it!

Magic 2014 Intro Pack Decklists Posted

Magic 2014

Magic 2014, the newest Core Set for Magic: the Gathering, is launching soon. With each new set that releases players get special Intro Packs that are designed to get them using some of the new cards in the set along with ones that are already available. The newest Intro Packs for Magic 2014 have been revealed, and their decklists have now been posted by Wizards of the Coast, so let’s take a look!

First up is Lightforce:

Lightforce M14

Main Deck

60 cards

9  Forest
16  Plains

25 lands

1  Ajani’s Chosen
1  Auramancer
2  Banisher Priest
2  Capashen Knight
1  Charging Griffin
2  Dawnstrike Paladin
3  Pillarfield Ox
2  Serra Angel
2  Soulmender
2  Voracious Wurm

18 creatures

1  Angelic Accord
2  Brave the Elements
1  Congregate
1  Divine Favor
1  Elixir of Immortality
2  Fortify
1  Hunt the Weak
1  Indestructibility
3  Pacifism
1  Staff of the Sun Magus
3  Trollhide

17 other spells

This looks to be a Selesnya deck focusing on dropping guys and making them bigger to attack your opponent. It’s pretty cut and dry, and it’s a strategy that’s proven successful many times.

Next is Psychic Labyrinth:

Psychic Labyrinth M14

Main Deck

60 cards

16  Island
9  Plains

25 lands

2  Air Servant
1  Archaeomancer
1  Clone
3  Coral Merfolk
1  Jace’s Mindseeker
2  Master of Diversion
1  Messenger Drake
2  Scroll Thief
2  Seacoast Drake
2  Stonehorn Chanter
2  Warden of Evos Isle
1  Water Servant

20 creatures

3  Claustrophobia
1  Divination
2  Frost Breath
1  Glimpse the Future
2  Illusionary Armor
1  Rod of Ruin
3  Show of Valor
1  Solemn Offering
1  Staff of the Mind Magus

15 other spells

This appears to function as an Azorius deck that focuses on dropping flyers and using spells to lockdown your opponent. This seems odd to me because Jace’s Mindseeker, easily the most powerful card in the deck, mills your opponent though you don’t have nearly anything else that uses that mechanic.

Third is Death Reaper:

Death Reaper M14

Main Deck

60 cards

8  Mountain
17  Swamp

25 lands

2  Academy Raider
2  Blood Bairn
1  Bogbrew Witch
2  Child of Night
1  Deathgaze Cockatrice
3  Festering Newt
2  Gnawing Zombie
1  Liliana’s Reaver
1  Minotaur Abomination
2  Sengir Vampire
2  Tenacious Dead
2  Undead Minotaur
1  Vampire Warlord

22 creatures

1  Act of Treason
1  Barrage of Expendables
1  Bubbling Cauldron
2  Corrupt
1  Smelt
1  Staff of the Death Magus
3  Thunder Strike
3  Wring Flesh

13 other spells

This deck offers a classic take at the vampire/zombie deck that’s commonly seen in black. It adds some red to it to deal with artifacts and to have some combat tricks, but otherwise it’s all about killing your opponent’s dudes and reaping rewards from it.

Next is Fire Surge:

Fire Surge M14

Main Deck

60 cards

10  Island
16  Mountain

26 lands

1  Chandra’s Phoenix
2  Dragon Hatchling
2  Fleshpulper Giant
3  Goblin Shortcutter
2  Nephalia Seakite
2  Phantom Warrior
3  Regathan Firecat
1  Shivan Dragon
2  Trained Condor

18 creatures

1  Chandra’s Outrage
2  Disperse
1  Essence Scatter
2  Flames of the Firebrand
3  Lava Axe
1  Negate
2  Opportunity
2  Shiv’s Embrace
1  Staff of the Flame Magus
1  Volcanic Geyser

16 other spells

Of all the Intro Decks I feel like this one is the most straightforward. It’s packed with spells to pummel your opponent, and Chandra’s Phoenix makes a triumphant return. It’s got a great mix of tricks to stop your opponent’s attackers while you break through with your own.

Finally we have Bestial Strength:

Bestial Strength M14

Main Deck

60 cards

17  Forest
9  Swamp

26 lands

2  Accursed Spirit
1  Advocate of the Beast
2  Briarpack Alpha
2  Brindle Boar
1  Corpse Hauler
2  Deadly Recluse
1  Elvish Mystic
1  Garruk’s Horde
2  Giant Spider
2  Kalonian Tusker
2  Rootwalla
2  Rumbling Baloth
2  Woodborn Behemoth

22 creatures

2  Doom Blade
1  Enlarge
1  Fog
2  Giant Growth
1  Into the WIlds
1  Mind Rot
1  Plummet
1  Staff of the Wild Magus
2  Vial of Poison

12 other spells

Garruk’s Horde is back in this set, and this time it comes with an ally in swamps. It brings the pain with large creatures while splashing black in for removal when needed. For some reason it’s got a Mind Rot in the deck, which doesn’t make much sense, but the main thing is that when this deck hits, it hits hard.

Honestly I’m quite surprised with what’s here so far. Usually the red Intro Packs turn me off, but with Magic 2014 it looks like Chandra’s deck is bringing the heat in the right way. Regardless of your preference, these Intro Packs will be coming very soon with the release of the new Core Set. Are you ready to try out some new stuff?
