I had played before, the others were new to the game. Only took a few rounds for everyone to get comfortable with how to play.

No question that the event cards make a huge deal in the game, especially at end game. That said, everyone got at least one that was good for them, so it balanced out. Counting points at the end wasn’t a big deal – no worse than playing Ticket to Ride or something similar.

All in all, we really enjoyed it. We’ll be playing it again.

Yes, completely. Some of the info has been updated according to the new ruleset (basically written for clearer understanding) but the main thing is that the information has been categorized better for easier lookup, understanding, and finding what you need much faster.

Comment on Written Review – High Command: Rapid Engagement by Raine /2016/08/08/written-review-high-command-rapid-engagement/comment-page-1/#comment-43554 Tue, 16 Jan 2018 20:15:02 +0000 http://initiativetabletop.com/?p=10412#comment-43554 Hi Jiloo! This is a shortened version of the game. The cards inside don’t differ from ones you’d find in the core set. Rapid Engagement simply provides a look into the High Command game at an entry point to get two players started.

It should make the counting go a lot faster

It was clunky and required frequent referencing which actually slowed the pace of the game, seeming to detract from the horror a bit. I liked how the initiative flowed and dealing with the looming dread of bad things actually being part of the system, but there were parts of combat and skill checks needing to meet huge Difficulty numbers to make a success that seemed to slow things down. I ended up hand-waiving or ignoring certain rules in order to keep the game from grinding to a halt during my 4 hour slot. Its a game with a lot of ambitious ideas, but it can bog you down on tabletop play. I’m guessing these issues might disappear for a Roll20 game or with a GM who has the book rules memorized fully.
